Lot Details

This hand-blown glass sculpture typifies Dale Chihuly's use of brilliant color and texture. In "Untitled (Amethyst Tortoise Seaform)," Chihuly manipulates smooth, finely patterned purple glass into an undulating shape reminiscent of a shell.

Renowned American glass artist Dale Chihuly (b. 1941) creates intensely colorful blown-glass sculptures. Chihuly's career working with glass started in 1968, when he received a Fulbright Fellowship after graduating from the University of Washington, and went to work at the Venini glass factory in Venice. From there, Chihuly co-founded the Pilchuck Glass School in Washington in 1971. His works are included in over 200 museum collections throughout the world and have recently been exhibited at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, Nashville, TN; the Naples Museum of Art, Naples, FL; and the Musée Magnelli, Musée de la Céramique, Vallauris, France.
