Modern American dancer, Isadora Duncan, became a lifelong muse for Abraham Walkowitz's, after they met in 1906. The drawings and paintings of the dancer became Walkowitz's best known works. This watercolor and ink work on paper of Isadora depicts the dancer in one of her famous tunic style dresses with slits that provided maximum movement. The image captures Isadora's force and grace that is expressed through her dance.

Abraham Walkowitz (1880-1965) immigrated to the United States from Siberia when he was 9 years old. Walkowitz studied at the Cooper Union, the Educational Alliance in New York City and the National Academy of Design. After studying under Jean-Paul Laurens at the Académie Julian in Paris, Walkowitz met artist Max Weber and became heavily influenced by Weber and his circle of friends and fellow artists including Matisse, Picasso, and Rodin. Upon returning to the United States, Walkowitz became dedicated to Modern art and became affiliated with the Stieglitz circle and the 291 gallery.
