Jack Youngerman is an American artist known for his abstract paintings of simplified organic forms. Influenced by contemporaries such as Ellsworth Kelly as well as the cut-outs of Henri Matisse, Youngerman explores figure-and-ground relationships through juxtaposing colored shapes. “The whole primary thing I work with in my paintings is an exploration and articulation of all the possibilities of abstract shape,” he has explained. Born on March 25, 1926 in Saint Louis, MI, he grew up in Louisville, KY,  and later studied art at the University of North Carolina while also in a training program for the US Navy.
