Mikhael Subotzky is a South African artist known for his installation, film, video and photographic work. Born in 1981 in Capetown, South Africa, he studied at the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town. Subotzky currently resides in Johannesburg, South Africa. He has been recognized with numerous awards, including the KLM Paul Huf Award, the W. Eugene Smith Grant, the Oskar Barnack Award, the Discovery Award at Rencontres d'Arles, and the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2015. His notable peers include Josephine Meckseper, Barbara Astman, Walead Beshty, Mat Collishaw, Stan Douglas, Idris Khan, Trevor Paglen, and Martha Rosler.
