Gerard Sekoto
(South African, 1913 – 1993)
Gerard Sekoto was a South African artist known for his painting and drawing that depicted urban black art and social realism. He was a part of the social realism movement. Born in 1913 in Botshabelo, Mpumalanga, South Africa, he was educated at the Diocesan Teachers Training College, Pietersburg. Sekoto was influenced by Ernest Mancoba and had notable peers such as George Pemba. He passed away in 1993. His works are held in the collections of the Johannesburg Art Gallery, the Pretoria Art Gallery, the University of South Africa Art Gallery, the South African National Gallery, the Cape Town William Humphreys Museum, the William Humphreys Art Gallery, the Gallery Guildhall, the Municipal Collection of the City of Paris, and the Philadelphia Museum...
