Gillis van Tilborgh the Younger

Gillis van Tilborgh was a Flemish painter. He is perhaps best known for his genre paintings of picture galleries and tavern scenes rendered in the tradition of David Teniers the Younger, as well for as his portraits of bourgeois and royal sitters. Born in 1625 in Brussels, Belgium, he went to become a master at the Guild of Saint Luke in 1654 after studying with his father and with David Teniers the Younger. Tiborgh’s work was notably collected by members of both the Hapsburg court and English royalty throughout his lifetime, and today his paintings can be found in the collections of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Manchester Art Gallery, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, among others.
