Charles Henry Alston was an American artist known for his contributions to painting, sculpture, illustration, and mural. His work often addressed themes of inequality and race relations. Alston was a prominent figure in the Harlem Renaissance and was influenced by John Dewey, Arthur Wesley Dow, Thomas Munro, Alain Locke, Aaron Douglas, Diego Rivera, and José Clemente Orozco. He was also associated with notable peers such as Romare Bearden, Hale Woodruff, and Jacob Lawrence. Born in 1907 in Charlotte, North Carolina, he later moved to Harlem, New York.
