Antoni Clavé was a Spanish painter, printmaker, and set designer celebrated for his dark and lyrical abstractions. Largely influenced by French impressionists like Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard, Clavé developed his own style of collage using paint along with materials such as wood and metal to create richly textured and layered compositions. He frequently employed newspapers and other printed materials in his works in a manner reminiscent of the French artist movement of affichistes. Born in Barcelona, Spain on April 5, 1913, Clavé received his formal training at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona under artists such as Angel Ferrant and Félix Mestres Borrel.
