Born in 1653 in Amersfoort, Netherlands, he moved to Italy, where he developed his distinctive style of cityscape painting. Van Wittel's works were characterized by their precise depiction of architecture and the use of light and perspective, and he made significant contributions to the genre of urban landscape painting, particularly in his representations of Rome and Venice.
