Sir William Orpen, fully known as Sir William Newenham Montague Orpen, was an Irish artist renowned for his oil paintings which often depicted portraits, self-portraits, and war scenes. Born in 1878 in Stillorgan, County Dublin, Ireland, he studied at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art in Dublin and the Slade School of Art in London. Orpen was a contemporary of Augustus John and John Singer Sargent. He was honored with the Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Orpen passed away in 1931 in London, England. His works are part of the collections at the Imperial War Museum, the Tate Gallery, and the National Gallery of Ireland.
