Alfredo Ramos Martínez was a Mexican painter known for his stylized depictions of farmers, Zapatistas, and floral still lifes. Martínez notably painted a number of his works upon newspapers, often allowing the text to show through in places. Born on November 12, 1871 in Monterrey, Mexico, he won a scholarship at the age of 14 to attend the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. Despite his early success, Martínez was compelled to leave his home and travel to France, so he could immerse himself in the culture of the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists.
