Celeste Dupuy-Spencer is a contemporary American artist whose visceral paintings cull from memories and photographs from recent headlines. With brushwork that slides in an out of detail, Dupuy-Spencer magnifies, exaggerates, and excludes at her discretion, presenting the viewer with a diaristic sense of her life. “The paintings (like the person) are filled with anger, longing, resentment, humor, shame, and a total lack of fear around self-expression,” the artist Em Rooney said of her work. “They are judgmental, proud, and self-reflexive (especially around humiliation).
