Mark Grotjahn

Mark Grotjahn is an American artist best known for his abstract paintings which strike a complex dialogue with the work of Russian Constructivist Kazimir Malevich, Color Field painter Barnett Newman, and Op Art painter Bridget Riley. Grotjahn’s work often explores the vanishing point of perspective, which he uses as a catalyst to create expressive and brightly colored paintings. The artist is also well known for his mask sculptures, made from bronze sheets and cardboard boxes. Born in 1968 in Pasadena, CA, he went on to attend the University of Colorado Boulder and later received an MFA from the University of California Berkeley.
