Thomas Luny

(British, 1759 – 1837)
Thomas Luny was British painter of maritime scenes especially historic naval battles. Born on May 20, 1759 in Cornwall, United Kingdom, Luny moved to London as a child, where he apprenticed with the marine painter Francis Holman. By 1780, he had left Holman’s studio and moved to his own, which was in the same building as the headquarters of the East India Company. During these years, Luny enjoyed commissions from the company’s officers as well as invitations aboard the company’s ships to the Bay of Naples, the Strait of Gibraltar, and Charleston, SC.
