Jessie Willcox Smith was an American artist born in 1863 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was known for her mixed media works that often depicted children and motherly love. "A child will always look directly at anyone who is telling a story; so while I paint I tell tales marvelous to hear," she once said, reflecting her approach to art. Smith studied at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Her peers included Elizabeth Shippen Green and Violet Oakley, and she was influenced by Thomas Eakins and Howard Pyle. She passed away in 1935.
