Jay DeFeo
(American, 1929 – 1989)
Jay DeFeo was an American artist who pushed the boundaries of each medium she used, in search of profound meaning. Defoe is perhaps best known for her large-scale, one ton painting The Rose (1958–1966), which was completed over an 8 year period. “Only by chancing the ridiculous, can I hope for the sublime,” she once said. Born Mary Joan DeFeo on March 31, 1929 in Hanover, NH, her family moved to California when she was 3 years old. DeFeo spent much of her youth between San Jose, San Francisco, and rural Colorado, going on to study art history at the University of California, Berkeley. After graduating, she became a part of the artistic milieu of San Francisco during the Beat Generation, alongside Allen Ginsberg, Billy Al Bengston...
