Jay DeFeo was an American artist who pushed the boundaries of each medium she used, in search of profound meaning. Defoe is perhaps best known for her large-scale, one ton painting The Rose (1958–1966), which was completed over an 8 year period. “Only by chancing the ridiculous, can I hope for the sublime,” she once said. Born Mary Joan DeFeo on March 31, 1929 in Hanover, NH, her family moved to California when she was 3 years old. DeFeo spent much of her youth between San Jose, San Francisco, and rural Colorado, going on to study art history at the University of California, Berkeley.
