Beverly Pepper

(American, 1924 – 2020)
Beverly Pepper was an American sculptor and environmental artist celebrated for her towering sculptures of steel, stone, iron and earth. Some of her best known works include Amphisculpture, and the Todi Columns. Pepper was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1922, and attended advertising school there, before training as a painter in Paris alongside Fernand Leger and André Lhote. Pepper made a shift to sculpture in her late 30s after a trip to Angkor Wat in Cambodia, where ancient temple ruins inspired her. After her debut showcasing carved tree trunks in a Rome gallery, Pepper became determined to master metalwork, and learned how to weld.
