Liu Wei is a contemporary Chinese artist working in many types of media including installation, video, drawing, painting, and sculpture. Some of his projects include the Purple Air (2011–2012) series of oil paintings that depict stylized skyscrapers, and Indigestion II, a model of human excrement made from tar. “It’s a question of finding the most suitable medium. The same content is then being fine-tuned when applying in different mediums,” he has said. Born in 1972 in Beijing, China, he graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou in 1996 and began his career as part of a subversive movement called Post-Sense Sensibility.
