Barry Le Va was an American Post-Minimalist sculptor. Like his peers Richard Serra and Keith Sonnier, Le Va’s use of rough materiality and performance was a response to the sleek and simple formality of Minimalism. He incorporated broken glass, ripped up felt, or meat cleavers thrown into a wall, as seen in his work Cleaved Corner (1969/2019) held at the Dia Beacon. “Take time and figure it out, to follow the steps I took, to look long and hard at something nobody else would notice,” he once said of how he envisaged viewers engaging with his work.
