Lot Details

"2006-05 (Self-Portrait)" is major example of the unabashed and dynamic figurative paintings by famed young Chinese Contemporary artist Zheng Delong (China, b. 1976). This is not only a one of his finest paintings to-date, it is also, as the title underscores, is a rare self-portrait. This work measures 47.25 x 31.50 inches, is unframed and in perfect condition.
This self-portrait depicts the artist as an intense young man, handsome and serious, executed with swirling brushstrokes that is a signature of the artist's oeuvre, in which Zheng creates a fantastic liquid metallic feel. This ghost like, surreal self-portrait reflects the artist's desire to represent both his spiritual and physical self in one painting. When viewed from a distance this portrait becomes realist with intensity resonating, yet when viewed up close the figure dissolves, leaving stunning pools of color, shapes and patterns.

The artist was born in 1976 in Chengdu, in Sichuan Province. The artist is self-taught, which is an impressive fact, since his works have been the subject of top international solo and group exhibitions for over a decade.
Zheng was always fascinated with art but it was not until the late 1990s that he established a formal studio to begin painting. He is represented by the top commercial galleries in Asia, Europe and the US.
