Lot Details

Famed Chinese Contemporary artist Zhao Gang (China, B. 1961) is considered one of the most provocative and notable figurative painters of his generation, noted for his surreal works, typically of ambiguous figures in bizarre narratives. "Untitled (Man)" is a large-scale watercolor painting on paper that depicts a dream-like scene of a headless male figure, nude except for the white slippers he wears. The artist grew up during The Cultural Revolution and is a member of the Chinese Avant-Garde group, and is internationally acclaimed for his uninhibited manner of painting. Zhao appropriates imagery from historical painting and photos to reinvent a contemporary method which challenges authority and institutional formulas. This work measures 50 x 38 inches and is in excellent condition.

Zhao Gang studied internationally in Europe and the US, first at State Academy of Fine art in Maastricht, the Netherlands, Vassar College, NY US and received his M.F.A. at Bard College, NY, US. Zhao's works have been exhibited in New York at the 1986 seminal “Chinese Avant-Garde Art Exhibition”, “The Tenth Year”, in Paris, as well as solo gallery exhibitions at Volpato Gallery Beijing Courtyard Gallery. The artist currently lives and works in New York.
