Lot Details

Chinese American artist Zhao Gang (b. 1961) is considered among the most comprehensive members of his generation to represent both East and West in his works, utilizing racially ambiguous provocative figures. In “Nude” he paints an unclad female disconnected from the viewer, as if unaware in a contemplative surreal realm. His loose exaggerated technique and muted tones heighten an appeal of fantasy and give a playful take on a classic traditional ink painting. Gestural representation of a dissipating bouquet of flowers hint at unattainable consumerist sentiments, as well as his European formal training in Modernist painting. This work is unframed and in excellent condition.

Influenced by the Cultural Revolution and the Chinese avant-garde movement, Zhao Gang releases an uninhibited style of painting, and draws attention to the process of recreating iconic compositions, and images. He pulls from historical painting and photos to reinvent a contemporary method which challenges authority and institutional formulas. Gang, was one of the youngest members of the Stars, a Chinese ideological Modern art movement, and he often paints with prevalent influences from the China’s Socialist Realist painters. As head of the All-China Art Worker’s Association, his works allude to the past and future of Chinese painting.

Born in 1961 Zhao Gang studied internationally, first at the State Academy of Fine art in Maastricht, Holland, and then in Vassar College in Poughkeepsie NY and Bard College in Annondale, NY for his MFA. He has had prominent exhibitions in the “Chinese Avant-Garde Art Exhibition” in New York in 1986, “The tenth Year”, in Paris, as well as exhibitions in New York’s Volpato Gallery in 1989 and Beijing Court Yard Gallery in 1999. The artist currently lives and works in New York.
