Lot Details

This dynamic, large-scale oil painting by Chinese Contemporary artist Zhao Bo is a fantastic example of his iconic figurative paintings that explore ironic themes of a modern China in a post-Mao world, addressing the clash between Communism and Capitalism with an explosive range of colors and characters. His work mocks the social realist propaganda of Communist China, inserting cartoonish renditions of the ideal Chinese worker. Zhao's figures are hard to miss, ostentatious and exaggerated in physique and demeanor and painted in a neon palette, acting as visual metaphors for the exuberance of the younger generations in modern China. This painting measures 59 x 59 inches (150 x 150 cm), is unframed and in excellent condition.

Zhao Bo (China, b. 1974) is one of a group of young Chinese artists from the 1970's and 1980's generation called New Realists. "New" because their works differs from Classical Realism but also because it differs considerably in approach from the Chinese Contemporary Realist artists ten to twenty years their senior. Zhao Bo has exhibited at venues the world over, including the Art Museum of Yuangong (Shanghai, CN), Chinese Contemporary Gallery (London, UK), and the Denver Museum of Contemporary Art (Colorado, US), amongst numerous others.
