Lot Details

This is a stunning print in colors from the acclaimed "Amnesia and memory" Series published in 2006, and is a unique and poignant image by Zhang Xiaogang, one of the most famous Chinese Contemporary artists working today. This print depicts black ink spilled across a hand-written letter half-finished, with a bare light-bulb hanging above, shining a fragmented yellow glow onto this scene. The artist often depicts images of hand-written letters, and in this rare instance, the actual writing of a letter. This is not random imagery but Zhang's childhood was defined by writing and drawing, and he considers this image to self-referential. Zhang's most sought-after prints are mostly black and white, with unexpected inclusion of false, fragmented colors, especially red and yellow. This is edition 84 of 88 is printed on 300g Somerset velvet paper, and in excellent condition. This paper size measures 23.30 x 31.3 in. (59.30 x 59.3 cm).

Zhang Xiaogang was born in China in 1958 and has become indisputably one of the most recognizable and significant Contemporary Chinese artists today, and he has enjoyed this status since the earliest days of the international art market in China. According to Sotheby’s, “…these hallmark images have become nothing less than visual shorthand for the entire category known as ‘Chinese contemporary art’." A painting by the artist recently set a record for the highest price ever paid at auction for a Contemporary Chinese painting.
