Lot Details

This poignant portrait of a young Chinese man with eyes closed, grey skies to his back, is one of the most stunning images by internationally acclaimed Chinese Contemporary artist Zhang Xiaogang and belongs to his "Amnesia and Memory" Series. The artist is best known for somber, yet dreamy and poignant, images od families, children that often integrate patches of colors that belie the consistent, simplified features of his source imagery, the conservative black and white vintage "studio portraits" of families popular in China before the days of the Cultural Revolution. This work is printed on 300g Somerset velvet paper, measures 31.30 x 23.30 inches, and in excellent condition. This is edition 84 of 88.

Zhang Xiaogang was born in 1958 in China and is indisputably one of the most recognizable and significant Contemporary Chinese artist working today, and he has enjoyed this status since the earliest days of the international art market in China, now formally represented by the elite Pace Gallery. A painting by the artist recently set a record for the highest price ever paid at auction for a Contemporary Chinese painting.
