Lot Details

Famous Chinese Contemporary artist Zhang Xiaogang's (China, b. 1958) paintings and prints continue to set records on the primary and secondary markets, especially his figural works. This print of a baby boy dressed in blue sweater vest and white shirt is one of the most sought-after and important images. Zhang is best known somber yet soft and poignant, depictions of families, and babies, such as this print. False colors, such as the brilliant yellow skin of this child, belie the consistent, smoothed simplified features of the original source imagery for Zhang's work: the conservative black and white, often retouched vintage "studio portraits" of families popular in China before the days of the Cultural Revolution. With the widespread disappearance of the “family portrait” during the Cultural Revolution, these painted portraits and objects that occupied his home-life, become steeped in an air of memory, nostalgia and loss. This print is in excellent condition, loose as issued, measures 31.30 x 23.10 and from an edition of 88.

Zhang Xiaogang (China, b. 1958) is indisputably one of the most recognizable and significant Contemporary Chinese artist today, and he has enjoyed this status since the earliest days of the international art market in China. A painting by the artist just set a record for the highest price ever paid at auction for a Contemporary Chinese painting.
