Lot Details

In honor of the artist's present solo exhibition at Pace Beijing Gallery,
"Beijing Voice: Zhang Xiaogang", artnet Auctions offer this iconic color silkscreen print by Zhang that measures 31.30 x 23.30 inches is edition 84/88, is unframed and in excellent condition. This print of a wide-eyed Chinese baby boy wearing a white shirt and sweater vest is from the artist's famed "Amnesia and Memory" Series of prints. Zhang is best known for sombre, yet somehow dreamy and poignant, paintings and prints of families, children and surreal narratives. False colors and often surreal incongruous elements belie the consistent, smoothed simplified features of the original source imagery for his work, namely conservative black and white vintage "studio portraits" of families popular in China before the days of the Cultural Revolution.

Zhang Xiaogang was born in 1958 in China and is indisputably one of the most recognizable and significant Contemporary Chinese artist working today, and he has enjoyed this status since the earliest days of the international art market in China, now formally represented by the elite Pace Gallery. A painting by the artist recently set a record for the highest price ever paid at auction for a Contemporary Chinese painting.
