Lot Details

"Bathing Girl (from China Girl Series)" (2012) is one of the most daring and exciting of the large-scale, realist oil paintings by internationally acclaimed Contemporary Chinese artist Zhang Xiangming (China, b. 1975).
This painting measures an impressive 59 x 47.25 inches (150 x 120 cm) is unframed and in excellent condition. In "Bathing Girl" an innocent young Chinese girl stands nude in profile against a lush blue monochromatic background, her porcelain skin is pure and luminous and her long dark hair is elegantly swept upwards and held in place by a decorative hair pin. She turns her head to gaze outwards showing off her lovely, exaggerated facial features. Her large, luminous eyes and pink, parted lips underscore an element of wonder, as she looks to see who has interrupted this private moment. "Bathing Girl" is a stunning example of the new direction for Zhang, painting this young girl's beautiful face, as well as her nude neck, shoulders and back, not just a super-cropped portrait of her visage, as is typical of his oeuvre prior. Never vulgar, Zhang paints this scene without explicit nudity, simply intimating at the beauty of the rest of this young girl's physique. "Bathing Girl" is a large-scale masterpiece by Zhang and is a major example of how this young artist continues to push the boundaries of his compositions while remaining one of the finest and most talented of the Contemporary Realist painters working today. This work is accompanied by a formal certificate of authenticity from the Studio of the Artist, signed by the artist.
