Lot Details

"Bare Shoulder" (2012) is a dynamic oil painting by one of the most notable young artists on the Chinese Contemporary scene today, Zhang Xiangming. This work measures an impressive 68 x 78 inches is unframed and in excellent condition. This stunning close-up portrait of a young Chinese woman is painted in such a way that she possesses both a surreal delicacy and a realist confidence that has become signature of the artist. The painterly, ombred background places her out of any specific context, as if her image is from a dream or memory. She is a beautiful metaphor for the mutual desires that young Chinese women of Zang's generation possess, namely a longing to look inwards and remain a part of traditional China, but to also explore their own sexuality and desires and to be a part of the new global China.

The artist is already famous for his so-called"China Girl Series" to which this painting belongs, comprised of both rectilinear and circular canvases that the artist started in 2010All of his paintings to-date are super-cropped, photo-realist oil portraits that celebrate and exaggerate the beauty of the young women of Zhang's native China and , selling for upwards of $43,000.00 Premium, as of Fall 2011. Zhang Xiangming was born in Guangrao, Shandong, China in 1975.
