Framed, 44 x 31 inches (111.8 x 78.7 cm). Huan emphasizes family and cultural connections in the photographic series "Foam" (1998), ten pictures that feature the artist’s face covered in foam with members of his family and ancestors bursting out of his mouth. Huan actually eats the pictures of his family, a symbolic act meant to represent that joining of the past and present. Though this series is very personal, it fits into his larger body of work, which addresses the collective history of China’s often brutal past, and remind us that the past is always with us.
