Lot Details

"Untitled no. 2011-5-4" (Anti-Vice Raid Campaign Series)" (2011) is a large oil on canvas painting by contemporary Chinese artist Zhang Haiying. Here a young woman, lays dramatically, face down in a darkened room. She wears a beautiful, rub-red flowing gown and is painted in a manner so that she stretches seductively outwards toward the viewer. Her luminous, porcelain skin of her exposed back and slender arms are in dynamic contract to the colors of her dress, the chaise and the room. Zhang paints this scene in a highly realist manner yet with confident, sweeping brush-strokes, that serve to imitate a color photograph being shot with a flash going, capturing this mysterious female figure in a moment of sensual repose. This work measures an impressive 77.95 x 63 inches (200 x 160 cm), is unframed, in excellent condition.

This stunning and important painting belongs to Zhang's famed "Anti-Vice Campaign" series, which was recently on view at the Saatchi Collection, London, UK. The series directly addresses the Chinese government's agenda to eradicate prostitution throughout major cities in China. The series aims to be non-judgmental, to simply capture a moment in time, yet the artist's painterly treatment of his subjects underscores the inherently desirable yet denigrated beauty of his female subjects.

Zhang Haiying (B. 1972) is a contemporary Chinese artist who specializes in faux social realist paintings, exploring devices of propaganda for non-political means. His works look at issues of power and vulnerability to investigate perceptions of emotional discord and disillusionment. His vividly captivating works hint at a complex narrative filled with notions of desperation, entrapment, and abuse that conveys the human condition through both victim and oppressor. The artist has exhibited at numerous locations internationally including the Saatchi Gallery (London, UK), Willem Kerseboom Gallery (Amsterdam, NL), and Sovereign Asia Art Foundation (Hong-Kong, CN), among numerous others.
