Lot Details

“Artificial Rock” (2001) is an major stainless steel sculpture by famed Chinese Contemporary artist Zhan Wang. Dimensions: 44.90 x 35.00 x 13 inches (114 x 81 x33 cm). Edition 2 of 8, with a unique and extensive incised inscription in Chinese and English on one of the sides. (see images).
In Chinese tradition, rocks and water are the two most important five elements, and through this sculpture's reflective surface, Zhan combines both in a spiritual totem, merging their associative connotations of stability, prosperity, and wealth. This work is also a metaphor for the fast changing face of China. Zhan created this sculpture by molding a flat sheet of metal around a natural rock formation; once removed, this shiny surface was reformed to create a powerful abstract representation of nature.
