Zeng Pu. "Heart Series No. 58" (2011). Oil on Canvas. 40 x 30 cm.

Zeng Pu. "Heart Series No. 29" (2011).Oil on Canvas. 38 x 30 cm.

belongs to the ongoing 'Heart' series of small-scale figurative oil paintings by emerging Chinese artist Zeng Pu, begun in 2009. This stunning portrait depicts a sweet moment between a young couple in love, with a man kissing the cheek of a young woman, who smiles demurely at the gesture. Zeng Pu rarely depicts more than one figure at a time in his ongoing small-scale "Heart Series'. Zeng's gestural and fluid use of oil paint here is at its best, with the delicate use of red paint to depict lips meeting in a kiss.

Painting at least one of these small oil paintings a day, with no two alike, the works in Zeng's 'Heart Series', express the varied emotions, as well as encapsulates the varied people, places and things he sees in Beijing, on-line, and in his dreams and fantasies. Zeng paints his subjects, as seen here, against an ethereal white background, totally out of context, further transforming this couple into an apparition, an emotion, as if a snapshot from a dream or memory.
