Lot Details

"Heart No. 21" (2010) belongs to the ongoing 'Heart' series of small-scale figurative oil paintings by emerging Chinese artist Zeng Pu, begun in 2009.. Here, an young, chic woman dressed smartly in a dark peacoat and wrapped in a brilliant red scarf at her neck a gazes sweetly outwards as she holds green foliage in her hand. Her beautiful facial features are framed by her dark brown bob. Zeng paints her against a white background, out of context, echoing the porcelain white of her skin, transforming this girl into stunning andcelebratory image, as if a snapshot recalled from dream or memory. Zeng's fluid use of oil paint intentionally blurs certain details, so that when viewed up-close she becomes abstracted, with controlled pools of color swirling together. However, when viewed at a distance, the beauty and elegance of this young girl emerges, due to the incredible skill of Zeng as a painter. This painting measures 11.61 x 7.25 in. (29.5 x 18.4 cm) and is in excellent condition.

Zeng Pu (B. 1982 Born: Xichang, Sichuan, China) is a rising star in Chinese Contemporary art, known for his stunning oil paintings from his already iconic "Heart" Series are based on the young people he meets in the art-scene, views on-line, or occupy his own thoughts and fantasies. Extremely prolific, he creates many small oil paintings in the course of a year, using the canvas as diary to immediately capture a vision, thought, or memory. Each painting is extremely different in subject, theme and composition, with no two works by Zeng ever alike. All of his paintings in the Heart series are small format, thus they tend to be exhibited in groups, creating a narrative and dialogue between the works themselves that changes as the works are grouped or added together in new ways. The artist intends for these images feel as if they are floating in space against the white backgrounds, representing the emotions that he feels in his own heart, hence the title of the series.

Considered one of the leading emerging artists from amongst the youngest generation of painters in China, Zeng Pu has already been the subject of an impressive roster of Museums including the Duolun Art Museum, Shanghai, China, The Macao Museum, The Nanjing Museum, and The Sichuan Art Museum amongst others.
