Lot Details

"Heart, No. 105" (2011) is an oil painting by emerging sensation, Chinese Contemporary artist Zeng Pu. This work belongs to his ongoing 'Heart' series of small-scale figurative paintings begun in 2010 that depict the eclectic entourage of the Contemporary Chinese art-scene, found Internet imagery and the artist's own fantasies. Here, a beautiful young Chinese woman, with long hair swept back, mischievously yet innocently smiles sweetly with full mouth swathed in red lipstick, and large luminous eyes filled with curiosity. She wears an oddly old-fashioned outfit of a high-collared white shirt, black fitted corset tipped in red and a long brilliant red necklace with red pendant around her neck. This lovely girl is painted out of context against a pale background, transforming her into an apparition, as if a snapshot from a dream or memory. Zeng paints her at the very bottom of this strictly vertical composition, leaving most of the canvas empty, as if she is an apparition literally fading from view. His fluid and gestural use of paint, intentionally blurs the sitter, so that when viewed up-close she becomes a loose and abstracted creature, yet when viewed at a distance, her seductive innocence emerges. This painting measures 23.60 x 11 inches as unframed and is in excellent condition.
