Lot Details

"Heart, No. 69" (2011) belongs to the ongoing 'Heart' series of small-scale figurative oil paintings by emerging Chinese artist Zeng Pu, begun in 2009. This stunning portrait depicts a young woman in a close-up portrait, looking side-wards off towards an event or person outside of the picture plane, wearing bright, multi-colored striped woolen gloves, that she holds up to her face to cover her mouth. This portrait is visually arresting and painted at the largest scale (40 x 30cm) of any of Zeng's 'Heart Series ' paintings.
Heightening the level of surrealism, Zeng paints his subject against an ethereal white background, totally out of context, further transforming the figure into an apparition, as if a snapshot from a dream or memory. Zeng's gestural and fluid use of oil paint here is at its best, intentionally blurs all details so that when viewed up-close the facial features and colors of the gloves become nearly abstracted into swirls and pools of color, yet when viewed at a distance, the dynamism and composition of this portrait resonates.
