Lot Details

"Header No. 46" (2007) is one of the finest of the sublime ink and watercolor portraits of young children on handmade paper by famous Chinese Contemporary artist Zeng Jianyong (China, B. 1971). "Header No.46" belongs to Zeng's internationally acclaimed "The Header Series"- the term 'header' refers to the title awarded to those students in China at the top of their class, identified by the black scarf they wear tied around their necks. This painting measures 56 .75 x 28.25 inches, is laid on board and is in perfect condition. "The Header Series" portraits are close-up, readily identifiable images of young boys and girls that combine realism with exaggerated features, especially their overly large, mesmerizing eyes that act as 'windows to the soul' of his sitters, expressing a complex emotional depth which immediately engages the viewer. This image of a young boy with a full backpack and baindaids on his arm from a schoolyard scuffle lend a particularly poignant and element to this portrait.

Although Zeng uses techniques and materials associated with traditional Chinese painting, his style and subject choices address Contemporary issues in China today. Zeng Jianyong was born in China in 1971 graduated from the Chinese Painting Department, Huaqiao University as well as the Printmaking Department, Central Academy of Fine Arts. His first group exhibition was in 1994 at China Art Student Annual Art Awards, Shenyang, China and since then Jianyong has participated in Museum and Gallery exhibitions throughout the world. The artist presently lives and works in Beijing and Shenzhen.
