Lot Details

This exciting print is the first edition to ever come to the international auction. "Chairman Mao's Birthday" (2011) is a rare and dynamic large-scale color lithograph that encapsulates the very best of the decades long body of work by famed post-Modern Chinese artist Yu Youhan and belongs to his world famous "Mao Series" which he started in 1989, and consists of depictions of portraits of Mao's everyday life as imagined by Yu. In "Chairman Mao's Birthday" the artist turns what was originally a conservative image of Mao seated in an large chair in a domestic interior into a psychedelic Pop-Art wonderland of colors and patterns. In Yu's colored, floral-strewn portraits such as this, Mao's own principles of "art for the purpose of political instruction" and "art for the pleasure of the masses, " that he set forth in his Yan'an talks on literature and art are given an ironic twist. This print is in excellent condition, loose as issues and measures 47.50 x 31.50 inches/120 x 80 cm, is edition 50/80 and in excellent condition.
