This stunning color photograph belongs to the iconic Series of surreal nudes by emerging female Chinese Contemporary photographer Yu Hang, already represented by top galleries in New York, Singapore, China and Europe. Her works are stunning snapshots into an ethereal world that feel like fantasies or dreams. A young woman stands nude, her face dramatically made up as if she were on stage as an opera singers with face powdered white. She only wears a traditional, ornate red headdress with long feathers arching that frame her face and bear long golden tassels. She is totally nude except for her headdress and the sheathed sword she hold at her side, tradtionally a man's possession. Upon her bare porcelain skin Yu has also transposed stunning polychrome traditional Chinese figures that in an elaborate manner "cover" her nudity. Additional Chinese calligraphic elements are depicted in the background of this mysterious locale she dwells in, these details added to the c-print via digital processes by Yu. In this manner, tradition and technology merge, which is the undercurrent of most of Yu's work.

Emotional intensity is heightened by both the uncertainty of whether this is a painting or a photograph as the blurred margins lend a painterly feel, and also by the rich tones and surreal details of the work, that feel both Contemporary and Traditional at the same time. Is this a hand-colored Vintage photograph or a Contemporary photograph or somehow both? Her All of her works take inspiration from Chinese heroines such as Mu Gu iY ing and Yu Ji. Solmend and dignified figures indulging themselves in a private moment nude in a private, a liberating moment as if in front of a mirror, the girls also willingly present themselves to the gaze of the viewer. The stunning photographs of Yu Hang transport one to a world between past and present, into a surreal and sensual realm that is uniquely her own, and proves why she is one of the top emerging photographers in China and a rising star among the Chinese Contemporary artists of her 1980's generation.
