Lot Details

"Scent No. 3" (2007) is one of the finest and most unabashedly sensual of the color photographs Yu Hang (China B. 1981), that belongs to the famed 'Scent' photographic series by this rising star, already represented by top galleries in New York, China and Singapore. This color photograph measures 39.37 x 39. 37 inches (100 x 100 cm) and is in excellent condition. This is final photograph available for the edition, as it is AP 2/2 aside from formal edition of 8.

The works of Yu Hang are stunning snapshots into ethereal worldds that feel like fantasies or dreams, as in "Scent No. 3". This quietly erotic photograph depicts a young, nude Chinese woman leaning forward toward the camera, a fan placed at her side, wearing traditional makeup and hairstyle, elegantly accessorized, with a pink lotus bud placed at the center of her forehead and traditional Chinese erotic lovemaking scene transposed upon chest, with additional Chinese calligraphic and design elements into other parts of the room she is in by digital enhancement of the scene by Yu. In this manner, tradition and technology merge.
Emotional intensity is heightened by both the uncertainty of whether this is a painting or a photograph as the blurred margins lend a painterly feel, and also by the tones and surreal details of the work, that feel both Contemporary and Traditional at the same time. Yu Hang transports one to a world in between past and present, into a surreal and sensual realm that is uniquely her own, and proves why she is one of the top female artists of her generation.

Yu Hang was born in 1981 in China and in 2001 Graduated from the Sheng Yang Lu Yi Art School. She received a degree in 2006 from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, China and studied from 2007-9 to receive her Masters of Fine Arts at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, China .
