Lot Details

"Crysanthemum" (2009) is a stunning snapshot into ethereal worlds that are evocative of a fantasy or dream, and belongs to the famed 'Scent' photographic series by this rising star, Yu Hang, (b. 1981) already represented by top galleries in New York, China and Singapore. This quietly erotic photograph depicts a young, nude Chinese woman with her back facing the camera, wearing the traditional Chinese ceremonial hairstyle, elegantly accessorized with a red beads in her hair, with an embellished robe falling off her frame. A traditional flower ink painting is transposed upon her back, contrasting the warrior figures subsumed into the background of the room, a technique of digital enhancement by Yu. In this manner, tradition and technology merge. This color photograph is edition 3 of just 10, measuring 39.37 x 39. 37 inches, (100 x 100 cm) and is in excellent condition.

Emotional intensity is heightened by both the uncertainty of whether this is a painting or a photograph as the blurred margins lend a painterly feel. Yu Hang transports one to a world in between past and present, into a surreal and sensual realm that is uniquely her own, and proves why she is one of the top female artists of her generation.

Yu Hang was born in 1981 in China and in 2001 Graduated from the Sheng Yang Lu Yi Art School. She received a degree in 2006 from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, China and studied from 2007-9 to receive her Masters of Fine Arts at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, China . She is represented and exhibited by top galleries including Eli Klein Fine Art and Yang Gallery amongst others. Recent Solo Exhibitions include in 2008 "China Avant Garde", Los Angeles , “Chalk, Ink” Beijing Tangsheng Art Salon; in 2007 “The Female Dormitory at The New Kaifeng Bridge”, Longyibang Gallery, Beijing. Her most recent group gallery show was in 2009 "Passing by China", Eli Klein Fine Art, New York with numerous shows throughout China, Asia and the US prior. The artist lives and works in China.
