Lot Details

Yoshitomo Nara (b. 1959) is a Contemporary Japanese Pop artist. The artist is influenced by the manga and anime of his childhood. His work often shows simple cartoonish children in pastel colors. While their faces may look vulnerable, they hold weapons such as knives and guns.

In Nara's series entitled ‘In a Floating World’ the artist utilizes the traditional genre of Ukiyo-e, which literally means ‘pictures of the floating world.’ Ukiyo-e describes the traditional craft of woodblock printing in Japan. Nara’s characters are placed in completely unusual scenery- devoid of the usual emptiness associated with traditional Ukiyo-e prints and instead now interacting with and enmeshed in the mesmerizing and traditional world of Japanese culture. A color copy reworked from a woodcut, this limited edition of 50 is beautifully framed and in excellent condition.
