"Urban fiction no. 19" is a stunning, large-scale color photography by international acclaimed Chinese Contemporary artist Xing Danwen from her world-famous "Urban Fiction" Series from 2004-06. This photograph measures 31.50 x 40.5 inches (80 x 103 cm), is unframed, from an edition of 8 and is in excellent condition. This is the first edition of this photograph to ever come to international auction as a single lot.
In this Series, Xing addresses the reshaping our urban environment and the new vision of contemporary life in China- which celebrates the “new” constantly replacing the “old.” The architectural structures photographed in this Series are all actual maquettes from architectural firms made to promote real-estate developments in China that are being planned today, some of the buildings already exist, and others will soon begin construction. The "Urban Fiction" series also explores the rise in personal wealth in China, as living spaces expand with the growth of income, Chinese city-scapes becomes more dense, filled with high-rise towers. People live in cubes squeezed next to one another, separated only by thin walls. This physical proximity, instead of leading to greater closeness and intimacy between people, can often create psychological distance and loneliness.
