Lot Details

'Urban Fiction # 26' (2006) is one of the most sublime and sought-after color photographs by important Chinese artist Xing Danwen, that is a major example from the artist's famous "Urban Fiction" Series, where the artist photographs various miniature architectural models of real building plans from her native Beijing. This work is edition 2 of 10 and measures 24 x 44 inches (111.8 cm x 61 cm). The work is mounted on alubond, unframed and is in excellent condition.

The photographs from her "Urban Fiction" Series capture a poignant perspective of the typical highrise living spaces of the massive inner city of Beijing, a city that is now home to over 20 million people. After photographing each model and experimenting with light, color and atmosphere, the sense of place becomes distorted and ambiguity of location blends into the perception of a universal, abandoned megalopolis. Her works embrace and interpret the modernized Western life from the perspective of one who was born and raised in China, while at the same time emphasizing the universal amalgamation of present day Urbanization.

Xing Danwen (China. B. 1967) has spent her life living and working abroad, discerning the notion of the Avant-Garde Chinese artists in the globalization of the Contemporary art world. The artist moved to New York in the early 2000's and studied at the School for Visual Arts. Xing Danwen was born in Xi'an China, and graduated with a BFA in 1992 from Central Academy of Fine Arts, and an MFA in 2000 from the School of Visual Arts. Her solo and group exhibitions include the Chinese Museum, in Melbourne, Australia, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, the Museum of Art in Santa Barbara, CA, and many more.
