Lot Details

"Butterfly No. 5" (2007) is a stunning large-scale oil painting by rising star, emerging Chinese Contemporary artist, Wu DeWu is one of the most visually and conceptually accomplished works by the artist to-date. This ethereal ombred blue canvas depicts a majestic butterfly whose stunning wings are painted in incredible detail in a vibrant palette of brilliant reds, oranges, rusts and yellows that are in stunning contrast to the ethereal background. Upon closer inspection it becomes evident that this is more than just a pretty picture. The seemingly placid blue background is actually comprised of hundreds of small black human figures, whom all collectively rush towards the butterfly to actually become both a part of the creature's wings, as well as grasp on to them to join the butterfly on its journey, as it takes flight at the top of the canvas. Wang is famed for his dynamic large-scale paintings and most famously for his "Butterfly' Series of works to which this work belongs. Wu uses the butterfly to deliver his feelings about China's moment in time at present and his hopes for continued peace and prosperity for his country and for the individuals of China, as well as his personal feelings about the fleeting nature of things, of health, of beauty, and about the ephemeral nature of life itself.
