Lot Details

"Words of Justice III-C" (2005) is a celebratory acrylic on canvas painting by famed Contemporary African artist Wosene Kosrof (Ethiopia, b. 1950). This painting is in excellent condition, measures 13.5 x 14 inches (34.3 x 35.6 cm) is framed to slightly larger dimensions and is in excellent condition.

This painting is a stunning example of the artist's best known painting style based on inventive renderings of the Amharic script; and he is the first Ethiopian-born contemporary artist to incorporate these script symbols as a core aesthetic element in fine art paintings. His recognizable "signature" emerges by distorting, elongating, dissecting, and reassembling the symbols as images. Wosene also uses the language Ge'ez in his work, which is the Ethiopian Orthodox Church's liturgical language. Wosene likes to examine the relationship between sound and color in art, with jazz an especially important in his own creative process.

Wosene Worke Kosrof was awarded his B.F.A. from the School of Fine Arts in Addis Ababa in 1972, and received an M.F.A. from Howard University in 1980. The artist lives and works in California, US.
