Lot Details

Executed in 1998 these early, large scaled, monumental images by contemporary photographer William Wegman portrays the artist’s iconic Weimaraner dogs sitting in profile in various positions. Looking expectantly and attentively at something unseen outside the frame, Wegman was able to capture his dogs in a way that exhibits their uncanny beauty and musculature, without dressing them in the complex costumes so often employed in his work.

Depending on installation preferences, this suite measures either 94" x 70" stacked two on top of two, or 47 x 140" installed as a four panel panorama.

Photographer William Wegman (B. 1943) is best known for photographing dogs, primarily his own Weimaraners which he dresses in various costumes and arranges in a series of different compositions. Initially, Wegman sought to pursue a career as a painter, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from Massachusetts College of Art in 1965 and a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1967. While teaching at California State University in Long Beach, Wegman adopted his first Weimaraner, who he named after the artist Man Ray, becoming the artist’s iconic inspiration. His photos have appeared in books, advertisements, and films, as well as on television programs such as Seasame Street and Saturday Night Live. In 2006, a major retrospective of Wegman’s work traveled around the country to the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Norton Museum of Art and the Addison Gallery.
