Artwork measures 24.19 x 20.69 inches (61.4 x 52.6 cm).

In the very early years when William Wegman was working with the large-format Polaroid camera, he made rapid shots of the same subject and set-up. Each shot was slightly different, although Wegman grouped them into what he called "editions." The present work is number 20 from an edition of 40 unique prints. The subject is his first Weimaraner, Man Ray. A work from this edition is part of the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

William Wegman (b. 1943) is best known for his photographs of dogs, primarily his own Weimaraners, which he dresses in various costumes and arranges in different compositions. Initially, Wegman sought to pursue a career as a painter, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from Massachusetts College of Art in 1965 and a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1967. While teaching at California State University in Long Beach, Wegman adopted his first Weimaraner, whom he named after the artist Man Ray. Wegman’s photos have appeared in books, advertisements, and films, as well as on television programs such as “Sesame Street” and “Saturday Night Live.” He has been an artist-in-residence at the Massachusetts College of Art, and received the College’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1987. In 2006, a major retrospective of Wegman’s work traveled around the country to the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Norton Museum of Art, and the Addison Gallery. He lives and works in New York.
