Lot Details

For over fifty years, William Conger has held a coveted spot in the Chicago art scene. Time and time again Conger creates sprawling abstract compositions that reiterate his talent for illusionistic and evocative paintings. Conger received his MFA from the University of Chicago and has taught at Depaul University and Northwestern University. Conger has been dedicated to creating high art since the beginning of his career.

He explains his attraction to and motivation to produce “serious art”: “…when you look at Modernism and its various strands, it has a root in emotional experience. It’s still trying to figure out what it is to be human. The ultimate function of art is metaphorical…The blend of inner and outer reality…[is] so much more than only the material world. That’s just the window.”

Conger's painting are included in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago,
the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, and the Illinois State Museum, among others.
