Willi Baumeister (German, 1889 – 1955) was a German painter, professor and typographer. He studied at the Royal Wurttemberg Academy of Fine Arts and went on to play a major role in German and European art as a whole. In 1933, Baumeister was denounced as a degenerate artist by the National Socialist Party. This lasted until 1945, and few succeeded as he did during this period, in producing such future-oriented new form and content. After 1945 Baumeister was seen as an advocate of Abstract art, and was as highly esteemed as he was intensely attacked. In the 1950s, he was awarded the Klimt-Honor by the Vienna Secession.
